Empowerment Hub Center

One World Citizens

A PROJECT BY

Samuel Singer, Sidharth Suri, Jelmer Bontje, Yavor Razboinikov

CHALLENGE

The overarching challenge we contributed to is: empowering the villagers of Dusego, a remote unelectrified village in Rwanda, through ICT.

Computers and access to the internet can provide loads of opportunities to the locals, as through them they can access new information, develop their skills and find new ways to improve their livelihoods. In short, all these reduce the inequalities that exist currently between rural and urban people.

Our task in this challenge was to find a way to electrify the community center where the computers will be (aka the Empowerment hub).

PROCESS

QUARTILE 1

During the first quartile we took a deep-dive in the context of our project. We needed to know why electrification is something to be pursued on the first place and what its caveats are, when pursued, what systems are being utilized, what their characteristics are, and what the current electrification experience of Rwanda is.

QUARTILE 2

If the first quartile was about electrification of remote locations in general, the second revolved around the electrification of Dusego per se. We had loads of meetings with people that could contribute to the realization of the project. These included both stakeholders that we later on incorporated in the project and experts that could answer some more particular questions.

QUARTILE 3

Lastly, in the third quartile, the focus narrowed even more; our main effort was centered around detailing the budget of the project, preparing to hand the work over to the next team that will develop it further, and starting the crowd-funding campaign that will gather the money for its realization.
